"Ukrainian wounded soldiers are like Roman statues. Just as precious and valuable for art and the world."
The images you see are a series of portraits of brave warriors who have been injured in the war. This is a social project by Ukrainian artist Marta Syrko.
In her works, Marta draws a parallel between Ukrainian wounded soldiers and Roman statues she saw at the Louvre during her visit to Paris.
"They are semi-ruined, some without arms and legs, yet they evoke admiration, astonishment, and have very high value. I decided to embody something similar in Ukraine," Marta explained.
She organized the first photo shoot in mid-December of last year. At that time, due to blackouts in her Lviv studio, the heating and lights were turned off. However, the soldiers still agreed to participate in the project.
"It is a big job for me and the participants of the shoot, who have to undress and show all the scars. And for me, to talk about their vulnerability and at the same time the strength of spirit."
The artist is convinced that art has a therapeutic effect. It heals and loudly conveys important things to the whole world.
