Safe Pro, a leader in AI-based security and defense solutions, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ukraine’s National Mine Action Center to modernize demining through AI-based threat detection. In Ukraine, over 138,500 square kilometers of land are contaminated with landmines, which is equivalent to the size of North Carolina.
Safe Pro and the Center will collaborate to explore the integration of SpotlightAI™, a patented AI image processing technology, into Ukraine’s demining methodology and training programs. The results could help modernize the country’s approach to detecting and neutralizing landmines, as stated in the company’s press release.
“The Center’s mission underscores Ukraine’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies in tackling one of the world’s most significant landmine crises,” said Dan Erdberg, Chairman and CEO of Safe Pro Group Inc. “The selection of our AI-powered small object threat detection with precise mapping technology by the Center validates our vision and capabilities. We are honored to play a vital role in developing modernized demining standards and methodologies that will help save lives and restore land to safe use.
Through this strategic partnership, Safe Pro and the Center will develop next-generation demining techniques and training programs based on AI-powered threat detection.
The key functions of the Mine Action Center will include promoting cooperation between government agencies, public and private organizations, and research institutions, ensuring thorough testing, validation, and certification of advanced technologies, including SpotlightAI.
SpotlightAI™ is a patented hyperscalable AI-based drone demining ecosystem that operates on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud and SpotlightAI™ Onsite for fast and accurate mapping of explosive threats. The image analysis from drones can accelerate demining efforts by precisely identifying landmine and unexploded ordnance locations over vast areas.
The technology operates on advanced machine learning models trained on a comprehensive proprietary dataset, capable of quickly detecting and localizing over 150 types of landmines and unexploded ordnance. The tool processes vast numbers of sub-centimeter level images, creating high-resolution orthomosaic maps and interactive 3D models. Additionally, detection can be done both in real-time and with the scalability of AWS Cloud.
AI-powered maps offer comprehensive visualization of surveyed areas with GPS tags. SpotlightAI™ processes images in less than 0.2 seconds, while traditional manual threat analysis takes about a minute per image. Safe Pro’s AI-based threat detection ecosystem has already analyzed over 1,290,679 drone images, detecting more than 23,286 explosive threats over 5,338 hectares—equivalent to more than 9,975 NFL-sized football fields.
In late January, Safe Pro Group announced a memorandum with Ukraine’s agricultural company NIBULON. The collaboration aims to develop and refine non-technical survey (NTS) methodologies to expand NIBULON’s” mine action capabilities and speed up land clearance for agricultural use. The SpotlightAI technology was planned to be integrated into the company’s operations.
By the end of February, Safe Pro Group announced the expansion of its activities in Ukraine across a range of projects, particularly with Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI). Specifically, the partnership with the university includes:
-
Implementing advanced U.S. technologies into the bachelor’s and master’s programs on "Environmental Protection Technologies and Humanitarian Demining" at the Institute of Energy Saving and Energy Management, including the use of Safe Pro Ukraine’s SpotlightAI for rapid mine and explosive device detection, as well as monitoring and assessing land contamination;
-
Increasing the number of training programs for veterans in courses on humanitarian demining already operating at the university;
-
New initiatives for soil decontamination and land reclamation to restore the agricultural sector and ensure Ukraine’s food security.
