Members of the European Parliament have adopted a resolution strongly warning against further attempts by Russia to derail Moldova's pro-European course.

According to the European Parliament's press office, the resolution was passed with 508 votes in favor. The MEPs condemned the escalation of Russia’s malign activities, interference, and hybrid operations ahead of Moldova's presidential elections and a constitutional referendum on European integration, both scheduled for October 20.

The resolution highlights the role of pro-Russian Moldovan oligarchs and the Russian TV channel RT.

Additionally, MEPs called on the EU and member states to provide all necessary support to strengthen Moldova's institutional mechanisms and its ability to respond to hybrid threats.

They also urged for additional sanctions against political actors destabilizing Moldova.

"In the face of increased Russian interference, the resolution calls on the EU Council to impose additional sanctions on individuals undermining Moldova's sovereignty. MEPs also urged countries and territories harboring Moldovan fugitives, such as Ilan Shor and Vladimir Plahotniuc, to extradite them to Moldova for trial," the resolution states.

It should be noted that on October 20, Moldova will hold a referendum where voters will decide whether to support the inclusion of European integration into the country's constitution.

On the same day, Moldova's presidential elections will take place. Intelligence from several countries indicates that Russia will attempt to influence the outcome and prevent the pro-Western candidate, Maia Sandu, from winning.
