The EU Council of Energy Ministers, meeting in Luxembourg, is sending a clear message: Russia will no longer be allowed to weaponize energy or blackmail European countries with it. The EU will stop importing energy from Russia and end its indirect role in financing the war against Ukraine.
This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Dan Jørgensen on Monday in Luxembourg ahead of the ministers' meeting.
"Today we are sending a very clear signal to Russia. We will no longer allow you to weaponize energy against us, we will no longer allow you to blackmail our member states, and we will no longer indirectly help finance Putin’s war. We intend to halt energy supplies from Russia to the EU — mainly gas. I look forward to hearing from the ministers. We’ve discussed this many times, and I’m confident we will have strong support for this very important step,” the Commissioner said.
He added that while the EU is phasing out Russian energy imports, it will ensure that no EU country faces energy security issues.
"We want to keep energy prices as low as possible and make sure all member states feel supported by the European Union in this effort," Jørgensen added.
