The government of Sweden is preparing to expand the support programme for Ukrainian refugees. Ukrainians will be able to register in the population register earlier and receive higher payments.

This was stated by the Minister of Migration of Sweden, Maria Malmer Stenergard, reported by sverigesradio.se.

The Swedish government has introduced changes to the legislation to improve the social conditions for Ukrainian refugees from November 1. Registration in the population register will be possible after 12 months of stay in the country. According to current rules, Ukrainians must live in Sweden for 3 years to be included in the population register and receive a social security number.

Ukrainians registered in Sweden will have the right to medical and dental care, payments if they stay at home with sick children or are on parental leave. Refugees will also be able to obtain a bank identification number.

As of November 1, 2024, approximately 33,000 Ukrainians will be registered in the country, giving them the right to assistance in entering the labor market through the employment agency programme.

This will also entitle them to higher payments. If currently Ukrainian refugees receive payments of 71 Swedish kronor per day (6 euros) from the Swedish Migration Agency, they will be able to receive 308 Swedish kronor (27 euros) per day from autumn.

However, Ukrainian refugees will not be entitled to other benefits, such as child or housing allowances. Politicians and humanitarian organizations warn that the proposed measures are insufficient and many people will need additional assistance.
