The Military Counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine, with the support of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, detained a Russian agent preparing a new series of airstrikes by Russia on Volyn.
The suspect is a 30-year-old serviceman assigned to the local Territorial Center for Recruitment (TCC). According to the investigation, he was remotely recruited by a Russian military intelligence officer (GRU).
The investigation revealed that the agent attempted to identify and transmit the locations of Ukrainian military, Security Service, and National Police units to the aggressor. To carry out this mission, he traveled around the area in a service vehicle under the guise of official business, recording the positions of military targets.
He also tried to identify radar stations and anti-aircraft missile systems of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to facilitate Russian attacks by bypassing Ukraine’s air defense.
The agent sent the gathered intelligence to his Russian handler through an anonymous messaging chat.
Military counterintelligence exposed the Russian agent, documented his crimes, and detained him. Additional measures were also taken to secure Defense Forces locations.
During searches, a mobile phone containing evidence of the agent’s collaboration with Russia was seized.
The investigation revealed that the agent had been targeted by the Russian forces due to his relatives in Russia, with whom he maintained contact and shared anti-Ukrainian views.
The Security Service investigators have charged the agent under Article 111, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (treason committed during wartime).
The perpetrator is in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
