The counterintelligence service of the Security Service of Ukraine has detained another Russian agent in Donetsk region. The culprit turned out to be a 67-year-old resident of Lyman, who worked for the Russian military intelligence (GRU) and was awaiting the capture of the city.
On the instructions of the Russian forces, she would patrol the outskirts of the frontline community, documenting the locations of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
The agent focused on identifying the positions of fortifications and firing positions of Ukrainian forces involved in the fighting in the Lyman area.
The intelligence was intended to help the aggressors plan further military operations aimed at advancing deeper into Donetsk region and capturing new positions.
Additionally, the agent "reported" to her Russian handler on the aftermath of Russian shelling of the city and surrounding areas.
SSU counterintelligence uncovered the traitor, documented her crimes, and arrested her. At the same time, comprehensive measures were taken to secure the positions of the Defense Forces.
During searches, a mobile phone was seized, containing evidence of communication with the Russian special service.
According to the investigation, the Russian forces made contact with the agent through her acquaintances in Russia, who support the war against Ukraine and collaborate with the Russian military intelligence.
After being recruited, the agent communicated with the GRU via a "link" – a fighter of Russian groups who is fighting on the eastern front.
SSU investigators have informed the detainee of suspicion under Article 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason during wartime).
The offender is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with asset confiscation.
