The UK has successfully trained 200 Ukrainian aviators in preparation for working with the multi-role F-16 fighter jets. The training programme, coordinated by the Royal Air Force (RAF), involved both future fighter pilots and ground personnel, including aviation technicians.
As reported by the UK Embassy in Ukraine, the training covered a wide range of essential skills for both flight and ground operations. It included language courses to ensure smooth communication and comprehensive learning for all participants. The future pilots received basic flight training, while aviation technicians were prepared for ground operations, setting the foundation for specialized training on the F-16 fighter jets.
While the training took place in the UK, the actual training on the F-16 jets will be conducted in other countries, as the UK is not a user of this specific type of fighter aircraft.
RAF instructors focused on critical flying skills, including general aircraft handling, instrument flying, low-level navigation, and flying in complex formations. According to the UK Embassy’s statement, the Ukrainian pilots trained on the Grob Tutor T2, a training aircraft, as part of their foundational flight training in the UK.
In addition to mastering basic aircraft control, instrument flying, and low-level navigation, the future fighter pilots also participated in formation flying, enhancing their ability to operate effectively as a unit.
This training is a significant step in ensuring Ukraine’s readiness to operate advanced fighter jets, which will play a crucial role in their defense strategy moving forward.
After completing training on the Grob Tutor T2 aircraft and receiving the necessary certification in the UK, Ukrainian pilots are set to move on to advanced training on the F-16 fighter jets. The next phase of their preparation will involve flying the two-seat F-16s, starting with instruction from foreign trainers before transitioning to independent flights.
This specialized training will be conducted on the combat-ready variants of the F-16, offering a deeper focus on advanced flying techniques and combat-ready maneuvers, following Western training programmes. This will allow the pilots to acquire the skills needed to handle high-performance fighter aircraft in combat scenarios.
The first group of Ukrainian pilots completed their basic flight training programme in the UK in December 2023. Following this, a group of six experienced Ukrainian pilots continued their training on F-16s in Denmark, where they received hands-on experience with the fighter jets.
This ongoing training ensures that Ukrainian aviators are fully prepared to operate the F-16 fighter jets, which will significantly enhance their capabilities in defending Ukraine’s airspace.
