In 2024, Ukraine imported agricultural products worth $7.82 billion. This is 9.7% more than in 2023 ($7.13 billion).
This was reported by the leading researcher of the agricultural market and international integration department of the National Scientific Center "Institute of Agrarian Economics," PhD in economics Bohdan Dukhnitsky.
According to him, EU member countries maintained their position as the main supplier of agricultural products to Ukraine last year.
"In 2024, the value of supplies from the European Union increased by almost 9% compared to the 2023 figure of $3.68 billion, totaling $4 billion. At the same time, the share of EU countries exceeded half of Ukraine's total agricultural imports for the sixth year in a row, amounting to 51.3%," said the press service of the National Scientific Center of the Institute of Agrarian Economics, quoting his words.
The import figures from other regions were much lower, he noted. The volume of food supplies from Asian countries amounted to $1.5 billion (19.1%), Latin America – $580 million (7.4%), Africa – $410 million (5.2%). All of them also increased their agricultural product sales to meet Ukraine's domestic market needs.
"Since 2017, Poland has held the top spot as the main supplier of agricultural products to Ukraine. Last year, it sold agricultural goods to Ukraine worth $925 million, which is 3% less than the $950 million figure in 2023," the expert clarified.
In addition to Poland, other significant contributors to Ukraine's agricultural imports were:
- Germany ($623 million)
- Turkey ($603 million)
- Italy ($388 million)
- Norway ($329 million)
- Netherlands ($315 million)
- France ($294 million)
- USA ($286 million)
- Spain ($277 million)
- China ($253 million)
Together, these ten countries accounted for more than 55% of the total agricultural product imports to Ukraine last year.
The structure of foreign agricultural product supplies to Ukraine traditionally includes several product categories:
- Fish and seafood ($929 million)
- Fruits, berries, and nuts ($866 million)
- Alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages ($808 million)
- Various food products ($549 million)
- Cocoa products ($505 million)
- Tobacco products ($490 million)
- Waste, animal feed ($434 million)
- Seeds and oilseeds ($430 million)
These products accounted for 64% of the total value of Ukraine's agricultural imports.
"Food imports to Ukraine in 2024 became the third-highest in monetary terms in the country's history, increasing for the second consecutive year amid the full-scale Russian invasion of our territory, showing some stabilization of demand for foreign products, which partially complement the domestic market's product range," noted Bohdan Dukhnitsky.
