The British Embassy, with the support of the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, has selected 10 local communities following an open competition organised by the Ministry with the support of the UK Government.

As part of the Community Recovery Planning project, they will receive support in the development of recovery plans. The support will also include a range of practical tools for communities to help them start recovery as soon as possible.

“We received applications from 487 communities affected by russian aggression. Most of the applications were for the restoration of educational facilities, water supply systems and the establishment of rehabilitation centres. Our aim is to help implement reconstruction projects in as many communities as possible. This is a gradual process, and community-based planning is an important part of it. Although we were only able to select 10 communities for the project, we are interested in supporting those that were not included in the list. This project is part of our Community Support Team initiative, which brings together many donors and projects that support capacity building at the local level. I am grateful to the UK Government for its willingness to support local recovery, as it is the capable communities that will drive the recovery of the whole of Ukraine,” commented Oleksandr Kubrakov, Deputy Prime Minister for Restoration of Ukraine and Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine.

Communities selected as a result of the competition:

  • Vinnytsia region (Ladyzhyn community),
  • Mykolaiv region (Novyi Buh community),
  • Odessa region (Karolino-Buhaz community),
  • Poltava region (Hoholeve community),
  • Sumy region (Romny and Dubovyazivka communities),
  • Kharkiv region (Novopokrovsk community),
  • Chernihiv region (Sosnytsia community, Bobrovytsia and Mykhaylo-Kotsiubynsk communities).

The selected communities should meet the characteristics of the recovery areas and have not previously developed recovery programmes and plans. The communities have submitted objects for consideration for which funding can be obtained for the development of design and costing documentation.

The Good Governance Fund’s Community Recovery Planning project is an initiative to support local communities in Ukraine in their recovery and to increase the state’s capacity to manage regional development projects. The project is being implemented jointly with the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, with support from the UK Government (UK International Development), and is being implemented by Abt Britain and KPMG Ukraine.
