Ukraine has consistently ranked among the top five suppliers of organic products to the EU for many years.

This was reported at a conference by Taras Vysotsky, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, according to the ministry’s press service.

He noted that Ukraine currently has 260 certified operators complying with national organic legislation, and 436 certified under EU and/or U.S. standards.

“Despite all challenges, participants in the organic sector continue to work steadfastly, and this yields results. For example, there are now two certification bodies operating in Ukraine, reflecting growing demand and producer interest. Around 350,000 hectares of agricultural land hold organic status, which is about 1.2% of Ukraine’s total farmland. Our goals are ambitious — first to reach 5%, and eventually 25%, as planned in EU countries,” Vysotsky said.

He added that active work is underway to align Ukraine’s organic legislation with new EU regulations. Draft Law 13204-1 is prepared for the second reading and has a strong chance of being adopted this autumn. Overall, the organic sector is showing some of the best results in implementing European legislation within the agricultural sector.
