On February 6, the Energy Customs Service of the State Customs Service processed the first customs declaration for the export of biomethane.
"A historic event for Ukraine’s energy sector!" was reported by the press service of the department on Facebook.
For two years, work involving Ukrainian MPs, representatives of the Ministry of Finance, the State Customs Service, the Energy Customs Service, the Ukrainian gas transmission system operator, the gas storage operator, experts, civil society, and biomethane producers was conducted to amend Ukrainian legislation related to customs control and clearance of biomethane.
As a result, on February 6, 2025, the Energy Customs Service successfully processed a periodic customs declaration for the movement of the first batch of biomethane through Ukraine's customs border for export to Europe via pipeline.
"This is not just an important step in the development of green energy and strengthening regional energy security. It is a significant breakthrough for Ukraine on the path to energy independence and European integration," was reported by the press service of the department.
- Biomethane is an environmentally clean fuel that can replace natural gas and reduce CO₂ emissions.
- The pipeline export of biomethane opens new prospects for the stable supply of environmentally clean gas to Europe.
- Ukrainian producers are proving that our country is ready to be a key player in the European renewable energy market.
- This export opens new opportunities for the agribusiness sector and investors in the bioenergy field. It supports the agribusiness sector as biomethane is produced from organic waste, stimulating agricultural development.
Ukraine has enormous potential for biomethane production and can be an important supplier of green energy to the European market.
