The Security Service has exposed an agent of Russian military intelligence who was involved in preparing air strikes by the Russian Federation on the Cherkasy region. The main task of the perpetrator was to identify key railway stations involved in transporting military equipment of the Armed Forces to the front.

The Russian forces also hoped to obtain precise coordinates of warehouses with weapons and ammunition of the Ukrainian forces from their agent. In addition, the aggressors were interested in the locations of military hospitals where wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces are treated.

The invaders planned to use this information to plan missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian targets. In this way, they hoped to "cut off" supply routes for weapons and ammunition for the Armed Forces to the front, as well as to inflict fire damage on the locations with the highest concentration of Ukrainian military personnel.

However, the SSU operatives acted preemptively - they exposed the Russian agent, documented his criminal actions, and detained him in his own residence. Thanks to the swift response of the Ukrainian special services, it was possible to promptly inform the command of the Armed Forces to ensure the safety of Ukrainian military units.

According to the investigation, the suspect is a 45-year-old native of Luhansk region, who moved to Cherkasy region in April 2022 as a displaced person from eastern Ukraine. At the beginning of this year, he was recruited remotely by a representative of the main directorate of the general staff of the Russian Armed Forces (known as the GRU).

It was established that Russian intelligence recruited the man through his acquaintance - a fighter of the occupation group of the Russian Federation, which is stationed in the occupied part of Luhansk region. For communication, they used anonymous chats in a messenger. And for the transfer of intelligence, the agent provided photos of Ukrainian objects with descriptions, geolocations, and attachment to the locality. For each completed task, the suspect received a "salary" from the Russian GRU, which was deposited into his bank account.

During searches at the detainee's residence, a mobile phone with evidence of his correspondence with Russian intelligence and a bank card on which "Russian funds" were deposited were seized. Currently, the Security Service investigators have informed the suspect of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed under conditions of martial law).

He is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment.
