UNESCO will support the Institute of Archaeology of Ukraine and the National Reserve of Khortytsia in conducting archaeological research at the Kakhovka Reservoir area.
The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy announced that UNESCO will provide comprehensive support, including facilitating collaboration between government bodies and various organizations, and offering logistical and organizational assistance.
UNESCO’s office in Ukraine, led by Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, stated,
"We are ready to offer comprehensive support, including promoting cooperation between government bodies and various organizations, and supporting this process both logistically and organizationally."
To monitor the archaeological sites in occupied territories more effectively, UNESCO will use satellite images to which it has access. This will also help coordinate the work of researchers. Experts from the National Reserve of Khortytsia will be responsible for the excavations and may later conduct research on the left bank of the Dnipro River, which is currently under occupation.
A specially created military unit will also be involved in the excavations to protect the site from looting and to clear the area.
