The European Union plans to open clusters in negotiations with Ukraine regarding its accession to the EU next year, based on Ukraine's demonstrated progress toward membership.
This was stated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a speech at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in preparation for the European Council meeting on December 19-20, 2024.
"We must continue our political support for Ukraine. They have made tremendous progress on their path to EU membership. If they continue these efforts, we must be ready to open negotiations on the fundamental cluster at the beginning of 2025 and open other clusters during the same year," von der Leyen emphasized.
She added that
"Ukrainians are fighting now for a future in the European Union, and they must know that their efforts are being rewarded and that the flag of Ukraine will fly in the heart of the EU."
The European Council meeting will take place in Brussels on December 19-20, with the situation in Ukraine and developments in Syria among the main topics.
