President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, along with the First Lady Olena Zelenska, visited the retrospective exhibition of the Ukrainian artist Alla Horska at the Ukrainian House.
The exhibition showcases over a hundred artworks including paintings, graphics, sketches of monumental works from museum and private collections, as well as archival materials highlighting the creative and public activities of the artist and her closest circle.
Now, almost the entire artistic legacy of Horska the monumental artist has been lost, as most of her works fell into occupation in 2014. Russian invaders destroyed the mosaic panel with the bird Boriviter, whose name is synonymous with the title of the exhibition. The artist created it in 1967 for the "Ukraine" restaurant in Mariupol. Initially, the panel suffered from Russian bombings of the city, and later the Russian forces destroyed it along with the building.
"Being here, you feel why this is more than just an exhibition. Because the dramatic fate of the works is inseparable from the fate of the author. Alla Horska was not only an artist but also a human rights activist. The Soviet authorities destroyed her works, summoned the artist for questioning by the KGB, and expelled her from the Union of Artists. Therefore, it is not surprising that contemporaries saw her murder as revenge by the Soviet special services," shared their thoughts Volodymyr and Olena Zelenska.
The exhibition is open to all interested parties until April 28th.
