Ukrainian distributor Kinomania has acquired the rights to screen the new film by Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos.

"Poor Things," starring Emma Stone, is set to premiere on January 18, 2024, after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

The film follows the story of Bella (Emma Stone), who, after a suicide attempt, is brought back to life by the unorthodox scientist Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe), who transplants her brain with that of a baby. Bella struggles to accept her new identity and the world around her but, guided by the scientist, seeks to return to normal life. Eventually, she escapes with a lawyer (Mark Ruffalo), embarking on a journey across continents, fighting for liberation and her rights.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray from 1992. The original novella consists of testimonies and records from different narrators that vary significantly from one another.

"Lanthimos, considered a leading director of the Weird Wave, adapted the iconic novel by Alasdair Gray, using the language of gothic formalities, with clear parallels to 'Frankenstein' and 'Alice in Wonderland.' This film is particularly valuable as it explores the roles of men and women in society. 'Poor Things' is thematically layered, provocative, stylistically crafted, and above all, a humorous film. It has everything, from female multiple orgasms to communism, and undoubtedly deserved its victory in Venice," as we discussed in our article on the main highlights of the Venice Film Festival.
