A conference dedicated to the economic reconstruction of Ukraine will take place in Tokyo, with over 30 Ukrainian companies participating.

This information was reported by Nikkei Asia.

Possible areas of cooperation include energy, infrastructure, and agriculture with the aim of increasing investments in Ukraine.

"DTEK, the largest private energy company in Ukraine, has discussed with Japanese companies supplies for the modernization of power grids, projects in renewable energy sources, battery storage, or anything that can be done in Japan," said CEO Maxim Timchenko in an interview with Nikkei.

Thanks to investments by DTEK in solar and wind energy, the total capacity of the company's renewable generation has reached 1900 megawatts, equivalent to the energy consumption of the Kyiv region.

"In times of war, it is much safer to build more decentralized electricity generation," such as solar and wind power plants, "than large power plants running on fossil fuels. The latter are more vulnerable to military strikes," Timchenko said.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed plans for the economic reconstruction conference in a November 2023 phone call. Japan, with its restrictions on arms exports, is focusing on economic assistance to Ukraine.

Private- and public-sector Japanese organizations are expected to sign memorandums of understanding with Ukrainian counterparts at the conference. Projects could begin as early as this year mainly in western Ukraine.

The event is scheduled for February 19.
