The Japanese publisher PUBLIB has released an anthology titled "Ukrainian Cinema: The Complete Guide," written by Yuji Kajiama. The Ukrainian Embassy in Japan announced this on their Facebook page.

This book is the first Japanese-language publication dedicated to Ukrainian cinema as a cultural phenomenon. It includes basic information, stills, and posters of films produced in Ukrainian studios or by Ukrainian directors, from the silent film era to the present day.

The Ukrainian Embassy highlighted that the Japanese book market has been very responsive to the high interest among Japanese readers in topics related to Ukraine, with dozens of new books about Ukraine's history and culture published in the past two years.

The anthology provides not only general information about Ukrainian cinema but also detailed insights into the "best examples of the industry," including notable works such as:

  • "Earth" by Oleksandr Dovzhenko — a masterpiece of silent cinema that has made a significant mark on the history of world cinema.
  • "Man with a Movie Camera" by Dziga Vertov — "one of the most important films in the history of world documentary cinema."
  • "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors" by Sergei Parajanov — a vivid portrait of a mountain people, one of the greatest Ukrainian films of all time.
  • "The Fountainhead" by Yuriy Illienko — a masterpiece of poetic cinema, among the best Ukrainian films of all time.
  • "The Stone Cross" by Leonid Osyka — a solemn drama about a poor farmer amid the problem of mass migration to Canada.
  • "Aesthetic Syndrome" by Kira Muratova — depicting the modulation of the end of the Soviet Union through the syndrome of "anhedonia."
  • "The Tribe" by Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi — a film made entirely in sign language that has gained international recognition.
  • "Donbas" by Sergey Loznitsa — a dramatic film portraying the "truth" about Donbas, created by a master of documentary cinema.

The book also includes detailed synopses and production histories of 100 of the most well-known Ukrainian films.

The anthology is available for purchase at an approximate price of 3,080 yen (about 884 UAH).
