Employees of the Oleksii Shovkunenko Kherson Regional Art Museum have identified Mykola Dubovskyi’s painting “Winter Landscape”, which was stolen by Russian forces in November 2022.
The Kherson Regional Art Museum reported this on Facebook.
The institution said the painting was discovered in photographs taken in early March 2026 in Crimea during a visit by representatives of the illegal Russian-controlled “Ministry of Culture of Kherson Region” to the Taurida Central Museum in Simferopol.
“The identification of the painting stolen by Russians from the Oleksii Shovkunenko Kherson Regional Art Museum was made possible thanks to the inventory number on its reverse side. Mykola Dubovskyi (1859–1918). Winter Landscape. Canvas, oil,” the museum said.
The museum emphasized that the stolen artwork is part of Ukraine’s national museum collection. The painting entered the collection of the Oleksii Shovkunenko Kherson Regional Art Museum under the will of collector Maria Kornilovska. Its illegal appropriation constitutes a war crime.
Mykola Dubovskyi was a prominent landscape painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a member of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki), as well as an academician and professor of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
