Bulgaria will gradually phase out its use of Russian nuclear fuel for the country's only nuclear power plant starting from May 2024, utilizing products from companies in the United States and France.

This information was reported by  '24 Chasa.'

The nuclear power plant has two reactors in operation. Starting from May 2024, the fuel replacement for the fifth energy unit will be provided by Westinghouse instead of TVEL, a subsidiary of Rosatom. Additionally, fuel for the sixth energy unit will be supplied by the French company Framatome. Bulgaria is expected to fully discontinue the use of Russian-produced fuel by 2029.

Previously, the nuclear power plant relied exclusively on Russian fuel. The fifth energy unit was last refueled in the spring of last year.

"Kozloduy" is Bulgaria's only nuclear power plant. It provides over a third of the country's electricity and is a major exporter of electricity to neighboring countries. The decision to abandon Russian nuclear fuel was made by the authorities following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
