Catherine Deneuve expressed support for Ukrainians at the Venice Film Festival

On August 31, the Venice Film Festival began on Lido Island. One of the guests of the current film festival, the 78-year-old legend of world cinema, Catherine Deneuve, expressed her support for the Ukrainian people. The actress appeared at the press conference of the Venice Festival with a badge in the colors of the Ukrainian flag pinned to her shirt.

In her comments to journalists, she admitted that she does not want to speak about the war in Ukraine, but her gesture is a conscious act of support for Ukraine.

I’m very aware of everything, like a lot of people, and that’s why I wanted to wear the badge at the press conference. But I don’t want to comment because it’s getting worse and worse… My mind and my spirit are with them every day, but I have no statement.

The Venice Film Festival does not stand aside from the war in Ukraine. It began with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s address to the guests of the opening ceremony, in which he urged the audience: “…not to be silent, not to be afraid…not to remain neutral regarding the war in Ukraine.” Volodymyr Zelensky described the war as “a horror that lasts not 120 minutes, but 189 days,” and after his speech, he announced a list of 358 names of children killed by the Russian invasion.
