“This year marks the 35th anniversary of the Chornobyl tragedy. But the night of April more than thirty years ago divided the lives of millions of people into “before” and “after”. The word “Chernobyl” was heard all over the world. But he began to be mentioned mostly along with the words “tragedy”, “catastrophe”, “disaster”. This is really perhaps the greatest man-made catastrophe of mankind. And this is truly a huge tragedy. These are broken human destinies, abandoned homes and devastated lands of the exclusion zone. But it is also worth paying attention to the other side of Chornobyl – the courage and dedication of the heroes who almost nakedly opposed this catastrophe. More than 600,000 people took part in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chornobyl accident. Many of them gave their lives and health for the lives of others and the safety of future generations. We must preserve their memory and pass it on to our children and grandchildren. To never again allow such catastrophes on our planet. We must respect the feat of the liquidators and remember its price,” said President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The site “Chornobyl. Journey” created on the principles of scrolling – is a continuous story with multimedia elements that are activated when scrolling and pressing.
“It is important to reveal the secrets of Chornobyl and pass this knowledge on to the next generation. Every story has value here, every memory of people in emergencies, testimonies of liquidators, scientists, engineers, former officials, the military, and everyone who has something to say,” said Deputy Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Tymoshenko.
According to him, Chernobyl mustn’t become a place of oblivion but a point of development and correct conclusions.
“At the initiative of President Volodymyr Zelensky, infrastructure projects are being implemented in the Chornobyl zone, and the latest technologies are being introduced. And the platform “Chornobyl. “Journey” helps to collect invaluable stories about Chernobyl and better understand what happened on April 26, 1986, and how to live with it,” added Kyrylo Tymoshenko.
A team of more than two hundred specialists worked on the project: from historians to radiologists. The site presents declassified documents and research that help understand the causes of the tragic events and destroy common myths about Chernobyl.
