On the night of August 22, the Volgograd region was attacked by drones. The target was a Ministry of Defense facility near Marinovka, according to Governor Andrey Bocharov.
He stated that "most of the drones were destroyed" by air defense forces, but one drone crashed directly into the facility, causing a fire. Bocharov added that there were no casualties and that firefighters have begun extinguishing the blaze.
Residents of the Volgograd region reported that the target was the Marinovka military airfield in the village of Oktyabrsky, informed Astra. The first explosions occurred around 3:30 AM, with witnesses counting around ten in total. The attack and subsequent fire led to the detonation of munitions stored at the airfield. One local resident mentioned in a community chat that villagers were asked to gather their documents, "possibly in preparation for evacuation."
According to open sources, the Marinovka airfield hosts Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft from the 2nd Independent Reconnaissance Aviation Squadron of the 4th Air and Air Defense Command.
Following the attack, the Volgograd airport restricted flight arrivals and departures, with delays ranging from 3 to 7 hours. The Ministry of Defense reported that 13 drones were shot down over the region.
The last drone attack on the Volgograd region occurred on August 14, when nine drones were shot down in the Novonikolaevsky and Urupinsky districts. On July 9, a fuel depot in Kalach-on-Don, a few kilometers from the Marinovka airfield, was hit, igniting eight gasoline tanks. The depot is expected to resume operations no earlier than October.
In addition, on the night of August 22, attacks also targeted Belgorod, Voronezh, Kursk, Bryansk, and Rostov regions. In Belgorod, a local resident was injured in Shebekino.
