Energoatom is preparing to launch the construction of the Chyhyryn Nuclear Power Plant in Cherkasy region.
According to the company's press service, Ukraine's energy strategy for the period up to 2050 includes plans to increase domestic nuclear power generation capacity.
"Thus, the Energoatom team is actively searching for new sites for construction. The most promising site is Chyhyryn, near the town of Orbita in Cherkasy region. The plan is to build four new reactors using the AP1000 technology," the statement reads.
Energoatom noted that the first step in implementing this project has already been taken. During an extraordinary 51st session, the Chyhyryn City Council passed a resolution to:
- Grant permission to develop a land management project for allocating land plots to NAEC Energoatom for permanent use;
- Transfer land plots with a total area of 38.1493 hectares to NAEC Energoatom for permanent use.
Energoatom intends to revive Orbita, making it one of the most modern towns similar to Netishyn, Yuzhnoukrainsk, or Varash. The successful realization of these plans is expected to be a significant investment in post-war reconstruction and the support of the country's energy security, emphasized Energoatom's head, Petro Kotin.
He added that the implementation of innovative nuclear technologies would make Ukraine a leader in nuclear energy with unique experience and its own technological solutions.
It is worth noting that the Chyhyryn nuclear power plant project was considered during the Soviet era but was halted in 1989 due to the Chernobyl disaster.
