The heads of parliamentary committees on foreign affairs of several European countries have urged Georgia to abandon the bill on "foreign agents", while in the USA they believe it veers Tbilisi off the European path. The text of the joint letter was published by the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament, Marko Mihkelson, on the social network X.
The letter was signed by representatives of Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Denmark, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, and Norway.
Parliamentarians believe that the bill on "Transparency of Foreign Influence," if adopted, will weaken Georgia's active pro-European civil society. They recalled that Georgians previously reacted negatively to the attempt by the ruling party to adopt this bill, staging protests in May 2023. At that time, the government promised to withdraw this bill.
Parliamentarians described it as "in the style of Putin's Russia."
"We call on the ruling party 'Georgian Dream' to withdraw the bill from parliamentary consideration, as we continue to support the European aspirations of the Georgian people and expect Georgia to adhere to its commitments regarding the development of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights," the letter said.
