The volume of cargo transported in containers over the 12 months of 2024 increased by 28% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 258,185 TEU.

This was reported by Valerii Tkachev, Deputy Director of the Commercial Operations Department of Ukrzaliznytsia, on Facebook.

Breakdown by type of shipment/direction:

  • Export: 162,725 TEU (63%)
  • Import: 55,689 TEU (21.3%)
  • Domestic: 38,681 TEU (15%)
  • Transit: 1,190 TEU (0.5%)

“Grain cargoes remain the undisputed leader among goods transported in containers, accounting for 46% of the total volume,” noted Tkachev.

Primary cargo categories:

  • Grain cargoes: 46%
  • Ferrous metals: 20%
  • Oilcake: 9%
  • Vegetable oil: 8%
  • Sugar: 4%
  • Synthetic resins: 3.7%
  • Starch and starch-based products: 3.6%

Key trends in intermodal transportation across Ukraine in 2024:

  1. No seasonal peak in November–December 2024:

    • Traditionally, October to December is a peak period for cargo transportation.
    • Likely reasons:
      • Low cost of grain hopper car use (200-300 UAH/day), encouraging agricultural exporters to use specialized grain wagons.
      • Reorientation of grain exports towards Ukrainian seaports (86–92% of grain is exported through seaports using grain hopper).
  2. Decline in containerized grain shipments in the second half of 2024:

    • November and December saw the lowest monthly containerized grain volumes.
    • Reason: Significantly lower costs for using specialized grain hopper rolling stock for grain transport.
  3. Reduction in the share of rolling stock usage by "CTS Liski":

    • Specifically, the use of fitting platforms (FTG).
    • Share decreased to 24%.
