The Buicani sector court in Chișinău has issued the first conviction in a case of illegal funding of a political party in Moldova. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office reported that the defendant pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of 45,000 lei.
According to the prosecutor's office, the defendant used intermediaries to transfer money and "gifts" to individuals who worked on promoting the "Șans" party. These funds were used to organize events and promote the party, but their use was not declared in accordance with the law.
The man was detained in March 2024 when he was handing over a package with a large sum of 613,500 lei to an intermediary. The case was transferred to court in October, and its consideration lasted three weeks. As a result, the court ruled to confiscate 613,500 lei for the state.
The defendant has the right to appeal the verdict at the Chișinău Court of Appeal within 15 days.
It is worth noting that the pro-Russian party "Șor," recently declared unconstitutional in Moldova, has created a new political entity called "Șans."
Earlier reports mentioned that "Șor" is suspected of voter bribery during elections in Gagauzia.
