Since 2021, European Union countries have increased their demand for frozen blackberries.

This was shared by agricultural science candidate (Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences) Oleksandr Yareshenko during a conference, as reported by SEEDS.

"Because blackberry is a niche crop, there is a limited market. However, this market grew by 50% from 2021 to 2023. Only in 2024 did it decrease by 15%. There is interest and demand for blackberries in the market. The price is also present," noted the expert.

Oleksandr Yareshenko added that blackberries have early fruiting and relatively high yields: up to 25-30 tons or more. In addition, many varieties of blackberry do not face serious issues with pests and diseases.

According to the expert, the first "signal" harvest of blackberries can be collected already the year after planting, and the plantation enters full fruiting from the third season. The plantation can be used for about 15 years.

"The market for frozen blackberries (IQF) is growing rapidly, driven by the increasing demand for healthy and convenient food products. These berries combine flavor, nutritional value, and convenience, which is changing consumer preferences in various regions of the world, particularly in the EU. This demand is especially noticeable in sectors such as food production, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics, where the versatility and beneficial properties of this berry contribute to its popularity," said Kateryna Zvereva, Development Director of the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association.
