Japan intends to join a multinational demining project in Ukraine. Tokyo will provide equipment to Kyiv and assist in personnel training.

This information was reported by Kyodo.

As part of the project, led by the United States "Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine," the Japan Self-Defense Forces will supply Ukraine with demining equipment and cooperate in the training of personnel, according to a source in the Japanese government.

It is also noted that Japan's Defense Minister Minoru Kihara, according to journalists, will soon announce the country's plan to join a group in the field of information and technology to help enhance Ukraine's cybersecurity.

This step was taken against the backdrop of Japan intensifying efforts to provide non-combat assistance to the Ukrainian side, including its potential reconstruction, as Japan's strict rules on the export of weapons and ammunition under the Constitution renouncing war do not allow it to offer direct military assistance.

Details of such assistance are not disclosed at the moment; however, Japan might be asked to provide defense equipment for mine disposal, the export of which is prohibited by internal rules, according to the publication.

Japan has already supplied mine detection devices to Ukraine and conducted training programs for its personnel in demining.

Additionally, Tokyo has agreed to collaborate with Cambodia on demining Russian ammunition and bombs that did not detonate in Ukraine.
