The Arctic is a sphere of interest for a number of countries: the USA, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Sweden and Russia.

In the seventh month of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO and the United States should increase their presence in the Arctic amid growing Russian military activity.

It is reported by Welt am Sonntag.

"NATO should strengthen its presence in the Arctic," said the Secretary General of the Alliance.

The situation with the Arctic:

The Arctic is a sphere of interest for a number of countries: the USA, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Sweden and Russia.

Russia is influencing the region through its long Arctic coastline, partly through the expansion of its military presence. Thus, Moscow announced the opening of Soviet Arctic military bases and the installation of modern weapons, including supersonic ones.

China also claims its interests in the Arctic, calling itself a "near-Arctic state" and looking for ways to expand its access for economic and other reasons.

On July 6, it became known that Russia's large-scale oil production project in the Arctic was stopped due to sanctions by Ukraine's Western partners. Investors estimated its total value at 70 billion euros.

On August 27, it became known that an ambassador-at-large for the Arctic would appear in the United States.
