Kazakhstan has no plans to join the BRICS group, despite receiving proposals for membership, according to Berik Uali, advisor and press secretary to President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, reports Tengri News.
He stated,
"At this time and likely in the foreseeable future, Kazakhstan will refrain from applying for BRICS membership, considering the multi-tiered process of membership review and other aspects related to the development prospects of this alliance."
Uali mentioned that proposals for BRICS membership have been evaluated from the perspective of Kazakhstan's national interests. However, Tokayev prioritizes the UN as a universal and essential platform for discussing all relevant international issues.
Additionally, Tokayev advocates for reforming the UN Security Council based on extensive consultations with UN member states, taking into account the interests of "middle powers," as he believes the council has lost its ability to make significant and consequential decisions.
As for BRICS, Tokayev is "keenly observing the evolution" of the group and plans to participate in the upcoming summit in Russia, where he will address an expanded session on October 24, focusing on cooperation with Global South countries.
