Lithuania intends to invest around €100 million in the construction of a military training ground in the Suwałki Corridor, strengthening the defense of one of the most strategically important sections on NATO’s eastern flank, as reported by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense.

According to a press release from the Baltic republic’s Ministry of Defense, published on Friday, January 9, the facility will be located in the town of Kapčiamiestis, near the borders with Poland and Belarus, as well as Russia’s Kaliningrad region.

The funds are planned to be used for building shooting ranges and developing the training ground’s infrastructure. About 100 civilian staff and military personnel will work and serve at the facility. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense noted that the training ground is designed to host units of up to brigade size.

The plans to build a training ground in Kapčiamiestis were announced by Lithuania’s State Defense Council at the end of December 2025. At the time, the country’s presidential advisor, Deividas Matulionis, emphasized that protecting the Suwałki Corridor will be a priority not only for Lithuania but also for Poland and NATO as a whole.

The Suwałki Corridor is a stretch of territory less than 100 kilometers long, at the junction of Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, and Russia’s Kaliningrad region. Despite its small size, the region is of key strategic importance, as it represents the only land connection between Lithuania and the other Baltic states with the main territory of the European Union.
