Mirror cross with thousands of lights: a memorial opened in Vyshhorod

For the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion, a memorial called the "Cross of Heroes" was opened in Vyshhorod. The monument is dedicated to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives defending Ukraine. It was erected in Vyshhorod because it was here on February 24, 2022, that the first enemy drones were shot down over the Kyiv Reservoir, along with the first Russian tanks.

The design is based on a Cossack cross, manifested in three directions: in paving and inversion in space. The broken mirrored surface with fiber optics creates light reflections even during the day, while at night, thousands of light elements light up, converging towards the center. The cross-shaped structure in the horizontal plane is made from cast concrete with fiber optics. As for the paving, it is made from small pebbles surrounding the installation.

Interestingly, visitors can not only view the cross from the outside but also enter it from any of its four sides. Inside the installation, sounds associated with various corners of Ukraine can be heard, such as the rustling of forests, the babbling of mountain streams, the sounds of the sea, the whisper of the steppe, the wind's whisper, the echo of caves, and more.

The memorial was created at the expense of the Father Titus Wojnarowski Foundation. The idea was initiated by the developer Andriy Vavrysh, with the realization carried out by the team of lighting designer and founder of Expolight Studio, Mykola Kabluka. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, also contributed as a co-author, providing advice on religious aspects.
