Moldovan authorities are creating protective zones at checkpoints on the border with Ukraine where border personnel and civilians at the crossing points could take shelter in the event of possible drone attacks, NewsMaker reported.
Moldovan Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin said on October 7 that a Moldovan border guard who was injured after a projectile fell at the Palanca checkpoint was in stable condition.
The minister said the Moldovan authorities were working to provide all Border Police checkpoints with the necessary protective measures, including those located on Ukrainian territory.
“We are also discussing relocating Moldovan personnel to Moldovan territory. They have already been withdrawn from two checkpoints, and we will also withdraw personnel from other joint checkpoints located on Ukrainian territory. They will work from Moldovan territory,” Misail-Nichitin said.
She stressed that work was under way to establish protective zones “so that, if necessary, Border Police personnel and other officials, as well as citizens at the border checkpoint, can evacuate to a safe location”.
Regarding the recently injured border guard, the minister said his condition was stable and he remained in hospital, but his life was not in danger.
In response to a question from NewsMaker, Moldova’s Interior Ministry clarified that when the minister referred to relocating Moldovan personnel from joint Moldovan-Ukrainian checkpoints to Moldovan territory, she was referring to the Criva and Palanca border crossings.
