More than 9,000 Ukrainian military personnel have been trained in Spain under the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine).

Since the start of the mission in November 2022, Spain has delivered more than 230 training modules across 40 different specializations within the framework of EUMAM Ukraine. These training modules are conducted throughout Spain and are provided by various units of the Spanish Armed Forces and the Civil Guard.

Since the beginning of 2026, the training has moved to a new level: basic recruit training has taken a secondary role, giving way to more technical and specialized courses.

In this context, during the first four months of 2026, advanced training modules were conducted for the first time in military topography, military police training, and the operation of armored recovery and evacuation vehicles. In addition, a second course was held for crews and maintenance specialists of Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks, the first edition of which took place in the initial phase of the mission.

Within this activity, several training modules have already been conducted more than ten times and continue to be implemented. These include courses on the military decision-making process, the use of air defense systems, including the HAWK missile system, operation of the M113 armored personnel carrier, as well as the management of geographic data and geospatial systems.

As stated by the Spanish deputy commander of the mission, Colonel Víctor Amalio Samaniego Palacios:

“EUMAM Ukraine continues to require a high level of commitment and flexibility from our personnel. In order to ensure the highest quality training tailored to the needs of the trainees, continuous coordination with the Ukrainian army has been established.”

Due to Ukraine’s significant personnel training needs, a wide range of training modules is being implemented. These courses cover diverse areas, from international humanitarian law to ammunition safety management.

At present, as the war approaches the middle of its fifth year, reaching this milestone within EUMAM Ukraine confirms the unwavering commitment of Spain and the European Union to supporting the defense, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.

All training is coordinated through the headquarters of the Training Coordination Center in Toledo (Toledo Training Coordination Centre, TTCC), located in the city of Burgos. The European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) aims to strengthen the capacity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to defend the country’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, as well as to deter and respond to possible future military offensives by Russia and other potential aggressors. The mission works closely with all like-minded international partners to provide training support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and is open to the participation of third countries. All EUMAM Ukraine activities are carried out on the territory of the European Union.

As of today, 24 EU member states have provided training modules and personnel for the training of Ukrainian servicemen. The training is supported by the provision of both lethal and non-lethal equipment to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This equipment is provided by EU member states and financed through the European Peace Facility (EPF).
