Norway has implemented a new sanctions package against Russia. The package aligns with the EU’s 17th sanctions package, which Norway politically endorsed on May 28 this year. The sanctions come into effect today, June 27.

This was reported by the Norwegian government in a press release.

The new sanctions list a large number of vessels in the so-called “shadow fleet” used by Russia to circumvent sanctions, particularly those related to oil. The package also includes several Russian companies and individuals who supply the Russian military complex with drones, weapons, ammunition, military equipment, critical components, or logistical support.

“These sanctions send a signal that Norway and the EU are maintaining pressure on Russia. The 17th package further targets Russia’s economy and war capability, especially by doubling the number of listed vessels in the shadow fleet. This is an important contribution to the overall European pressure on Russia’s illegal war of aggression,” said Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide.

The EU’s 17th sanctions package lists 189 vessels in the shadow fleet, more than doubling the current number. The package also includes the standard listing of 17 individuals and 58 legal entities for actions that undermine or threaten Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.

Additionally, 31 legal entities are added to the export control annex, making them subject to stricter restrictions on the export of certain goods. This annex lists actors that are either military end-users, part of Russia’s military-industrial complex, or connected to or supporting Russia’s defense and security sector. The list of goods and technologies subject to export bans is also being expanded.
