Lithuania and Poland have planned joint military exercises in the Suwałki Corridor, reported by Delfi.
The location of this area is highly vulnerable in the event of a theoretical aggression by Russia on the eastern flank of NATO.
This agreement was reached during a meeting between the presidents of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, and Poland, Andrzej Duda.
"I am very pleased that the President of Poland sincerely responded to the desire to conduct joint exercises in this region. We are already talking about a very specific date, possibly in April," said Nauseda.
In response, Duda noted that Poland takes the defense of the Suwałki Corridor very seriously, and necessary measures have already been taken for this.
"We are restoring Poland's defense capability in the eastern part of the country. New units are being created, the combat readiness of units that were present in Białystok, Grajewo, and other places is being restored. We are strengthening the Polish military presence and reinforcing the border," said the Polish leader.
The Suwałki Corridor is a stretch of the border between Lithuania and Poland that is 100 kilometers wide, bordering Russia's Kaliningrad region to the west and Belarus to the east. In the event of a hypothetical war, Russian military forces could quickly occupy the Suwałki Corridor, thereby cutting off NATO allies' overland route to the Baltic countries.
The last time Lithuania and Poland conducted joint exercises was in early July 2023 in Klaipeda, where special forces from both countries trained to reclaim captured critical infrastructure objects.
