The European Union is ready to double its military support to Ukraine by purchasing weapons from local manufacturers, thereby significantly increasing its volumes.
This was reported by the EU Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, on X.
The Commissioner emphasized that the EU has the capacity to significantly enhance its support for Ukraine, particularly through direct purchases of weapons from Ukrainian manufacturers.
This will not only strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities but also support its economy. According to him, this approach could be an important step toward ensuring stability and security in the region. He further explained that the cost of weapons produced in Ukraine is approximately half that of similar weapons from the EU or the USA. As a result, the amount of weaponry provided to Ukraine can be doubled without additional costs.
"Our support’s real value would rise to €80B," Kubilius concluded.
The Commissioner also highlighted a new tool—the EU’s guaranteed security loans, which allow member states to finance military purchases for Ukraine. In his view, this paves the way for implementing the "peace through strength" strategy.
"New SAFE loans, backed by the EU, provide Member States exactly this possibility: to use the loans for scaling up military support to Ukraine" the official emphasized.
The EU Commissioner also pointed out that the EU is preparing a "Plan B" in case the USA under Trump decides to reduce its participation in supporting Ukraine or withdraws from peace talks.
This plan includes maintaining sanctions against Russia as well as strengthening military aid to Kyiv to offset potential reductions in support from Washington.
