At the UN Climate Conference COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, along with 30 other countries, confirmed its intention to develop nuclear energy in the near future. In addition to Ukraine, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom also committed to tripling their nuclear energy capacity by 2050.
"For Ukraine, the development of nuclear energy is a strategic task. Despite the ongoing war, nuclear energy has proven its reliability and critical importance for the country. Currently, nuclear power plants cover about 60% of electricity consumption and are the backbone of our energy system. Our goal is to continue developing nuclear energy with our partners, including expanding generating capacity," said Roman Andarak, Deputy Minister of Energy of Ukraine.
Currently, the state-owned company NAEK Energoatom is implementing several projects to build additional nuclear generation capacities, including the completion of Units 3 and 4 at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant with a total projected capacity of 2.2 GW, as well as additional units at the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi stations using technology from the American company Westinghouse.
