Baiba Braže: In NATO we have identified Russia as the most serious threat to the security of our allies and Euro-Atlantic security

During peace negotiations, Russian authorities are attempting to achieve results unattainable on the battlefield and are also trying to undermine NATO’s unity.

This was stated by Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels.

“No one should try to achieve, through so-called peace negotiations, results that cannot be achieved on the battlefield, and that is exactly what Russia is attempting. Russia is trying to undermine the United States’ position in the world, and Russia is trying to divide NATO,” the minister said.

She emphasized that Ukraine deserves a just and lasting peace and stressed that it is Russia, not Ukraine, that is creating problems for NATO.

“Regarding NATO, we have identified Russia as the most serious threat to the security of our allies and Euro-Atlantic security. This means we must take measures to weaken Russia, weaken its economy, ensure the effectiveness of sanctions, maintain strong deterrence, and prevent Russia from achieving results on the battlefield,” Braže said.

She believes this approach works, but “it takes time to produce results.”

When asked about preparations for cyber-offensive operations against Russia, the minister noted that some things “are better done than talked about.”

Commenting on Russia’s statements regarding a potential war against NATO, Braže said that Russian propaganda and disinformation should not be believed.

“Putin set red lines before the war, during the war, and changed them, and that is exactly what he continues to do. Our task is to ensure that we, as NATO allies, remain as strong as ever. We have always supported peace. The key measure of NATO’s effectiveness is peace in the Euro-Atlantic area, and we have supported it since NATO was established in 1940,” concluded the Latvian foreign minister.
