Center for Counteracting Disinformation: Intensification of Disinformation Campaigns in Germany

The Center for Counteracting Disinformation reports an intensification of Russian disinformation campaigns ahead of the early parliamentary elections in Germany, scheduled for February 23.

A significant number of posts on the social media platform X align with Russian propaganda. The aim of these posts is to discredit German politicians who support Ukraine and advocate for increased sanctions against Russia. Many of these messages contain narratives suggesting that the German population is opposed to supporting Ukraine or that such support comes at the expense of German interests.

The centralized nature of this information campaign is indicated by the use of bot networks spreading uniform content with identical hashtags and AI-generated images.

Attempts of Russian interference in elections have been previously documented by German federal agencies.

It has been reported earlier that Russian intelligence services are actively engaged in information operations against Ukraine and Europe.
