Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has voiced support for the idea of appointing a single EU representative to negotiate with Russia on ending the war in Ukraine, according to La Stampa.

“The EU should identify an authoritative figure to conduct negotiations on Ukraine,” Meloni said ahead of the upcoming meeting of the European Council, scheduled for June 18–19.

At the same time, Meloni stressed that continued support for Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia remain the only way to bring Moscow to the negotiating table.

“Our position has not changed. In our view, supporting Kyiv and maintaining pressure on Moscow remain the only realistic way to create the conditions that will compel the start of a serious negotiation process. That is why we support the 20th package of European sanctions, because as long as Russia refuses a ceasefire and genuine negotiations, it is necessary to maintain strong political and economic pressure,” Meloni said.

The Italian prime minister also commented on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

“We see Ukraine’s European future as an important element of continental security. Ukraine must continue its reform path and strengthen the rule of law. The accession process should continue while respecting the principles of merit and equal treatment among candidate countries,” Meloni stated.
