Hungary fully supports U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace efforts regarding the war in Ukraine and does not intend to take part in financing weapons purchases for Kyiv, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said on Wednesday.
“Some NATO European countries want to send more weapons to Ukraine, so they are again calling on everyone to contribute money through the NATO mechanism (...). But as long as our national government is in power in Hungary, Hungarian taxpayers’ money will not be sent to Ukraine,” European media quoted him as saying.
He was commenting on NATO countries’ plans to buy U.S. weapons for Ukraine under the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) programme.
Szijjártó added that Hungary does not want Europe to be in a state of war with Russia and is doing everything it can to support Trump’s peace efforts.
