In Norway, it has been warned that Russian intelligence might be recruiting Norwegian criminals to carry out sabotage operations in its interests.
Beate Gangås, Director of the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST), made this statement, according to Dagbladet.
The publication noted that in several countries, Russian intelligence has prompted local criminals and criminal organizations to commit acts of sabotage. Gangås mentioned that Norway is investigating several such incidents.
"Russian intelligence uses criminals for sabotage activities. From other countries' agencies, we know that arms supplies to Ukraine are particularly vulnerable. In Norway, we are especially vigilant when it comes to the energy sector," Gangås told the publication.
PST is aware that Russian intelligence has contacted Norwegian criminals through social media and various mobile apps.
"Russian intelligence recruits digitally. Additionally, those who receive and carry out tasks do not necessarily understand who the actual client is," Gangås said.
Due to ongoing investigations, Gangås did not provide specific details about the cases.
Earlier this spring, the Norwegian Police Security Service had stated that Russian intelligence agents were operating in Western Norway to prepare sabotage operations against critical infrastructure.
