On the sidelines of the NATO Summit in The Hague, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with President of the United States Donald Trump.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy commended Donald Trump’s leadership in the effort to end Russia’s war against Ukraine with a just and lasting peace. The Ukrainian leader stressed that Ukraine supports the U.S. position on a ceasefire, but Russia is taking no steps in this direction and continues its aggression.
The President of Ukraine spoke about two rounds of negotiations with Russian representatives in Istanbul, the only outcome of which was the exchange of prisoners and the return of the bodies of fallen warriors. Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that, in doing so, Russia also handed over the bodies of its own servicemembers – some even with their passports.
The Ukrainian leader informed the U.S. President about the situation on the frontline and the increasing number of massive Russian strikes targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump discussed practical steps to strengthen the Ukrainian army with appropriate capabilities and to protect Ukrainian lives. In particular, the reinforcement of Ukraine’s air defense was addressed. It was agreed to continue this dialogue with the involvement of European partners.
In addition, the Presidents of Ukraine and the United States discussed prospects for cooperation on the joint production of weapons and electronic warfare systems.
The two leaders also focused on the situation involving Iran. Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that restricting Iran’s ability to collaborate with other regimes would not only promote security in the Middle East but also contribute to achieving peace for Ukraine.
