The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ruslan Strilets, reported on such an initiative on SOR27.

"Ukraine has not for one day abandoned its obligations to the world community, particularly regarding climate policy. As before the full-scale invasion, Ukraine seeks to contribute to implementing the European Green Deal. We aim to achieve climate neutrality, but now we will have to make even more efforts. However, we have not abandoned our intention to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65% by 2030. We have transformed our climate ambitions into concrete goals and written them down in the Recovery Plan of Ukraine, which was presented in Lugano in July this year," Ruslan Strilets emphasized.

The Ukrainian climate office will function within the framework of the BMWK/EU international technical assistance project "Building capacity for climate action", the official launch of which took place today at SOR27.

The European Union and the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection (BMWK) will co-financed the project. The goal is to assist Ukraine in implementing climate goals on the way to decarbonization.

According to Minister Ruslan Strilets, the Climate Office will support the Government of Ukraine, cities, and regions, as well as enterprises and businesses to implement elements of climate policy.

The Climate Office will help decarbonize economic sectors, build adaptation governance, empower young people and regions on the way to the EU Green Deal and implement the Paris Agreement's provisions.

Developing and supporting special approaches to climate financing for Ukraine will be one of the Office's priority areas of activity.

"The creation of the Ukrainian Climate Office is an excellent example of support for Ukraine from our long-standing and reliable partners - the Federal Ministry of Economy and Climate of Germany and the EU, which GIZ will implement. I invite all countries that want to contribute to overcoming global warming to cooperate within the framework of this initiative," the Minister noted.

According to the latest estimates of the Ministry of Environment and international experts, additional emissions of greenhouse gases caused by military actions on the territory of Ukraine amounted to about 33 million tons of CO2.

The largest share of these emissions comes from fires - more than 23 million tons of CO2.
