A Museum of Avant-Garde will open in Kyiv as the tenth branch of the Kyiv City History Museum, as reported by the Kyiv City State Administration (KCSA). The relevant decree has already been signed by the Kyiv City Military Administration (KVMU). This will be the first Avant-Garde Museum in Ukraine, according to the KCSA. The creation of the museum was announced in July 2023, and it was established to preserve and popularize the legacy of Ukrainian avant-garde artists. The aim is to carry out "cultural decolonization," as avant-garde artists faced pressure and repression during the Soviet era.
Currently, the collection includes over 50 works donated by collectors and artists. The collection spans the first half of the 20th century to the present day. It includes works by classical artists such as Anatol Petrytsky, Vadym Meller, Oleksandr Bohomazov, as well as contemporary artists like Oleh Tistol, Marina Skugareva, Viktor Sydorenko, Hlib Vyshnevsky, and Oleksandr Zhivotkov.
The works for the exhibition began being collected nearly two years ago in collaboration with the public organization "Museum of Avant-Garde," says Diana Popova, Director of the Kyiv City History Museum. In December 2023, the exhibition "Ukrainian Avant-Garde. Evolution. Collection Update" was launched, followed by an updated version, "Ukrainian Avant-Garde. Evolution. Collection Update 2.0," six months later.
