Cyber specialists from the Security Service of Ukraine detained another agent of Russian military intelligence (known as the GRU) in Chernihiv. The agent was involved in fire adjustment and arson attacks, which he saw as “test missions,” with plans to later receive tasks to assassinate Ukrainian soldiers.

According to case materials, the Russianagent was a 45-year-old unemployed local man, an ideological supporter of Russia. He came to the attention of the Russian forces due to his pro-Russian comments on the Telegram messenger.

Initially, under orders from Russia’s GRU, the suspect set fire to a military pickup truck and a transformer substation in Chernihiv.

He was then tasked with adjusting Russian strikes in the northern region. For this, he rented apartments with panoramic views of defense and civilian sites, focusing mainly on Ukrainian Armed Forces repair bases and medical facilities treating wounded Ukrainian soldiers.

Later, as he confessed to SSU officers, he informed his Russian handler of his willingness to physically eliminate Ukrainian soldiers.

To carry out these attacks, the agent planned to use improvised explosive devices or kamikaze drones.

However, the SSU thwarted his plans and detained the agent. Comprehensive measures were taken to secure Defense Forces locations and protect the lives of Ukrainian servicemen.

During searches, authorities seized a mobile phone and computer that he used to communicate with the Russian GRU.

The suspect is currently in custody and faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
