On December 16, Russia launched a massive rocket attack on the territory of Ukraine. Explosions sounded in a number of cities - Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih and others.

Yuriy Ignat, the spokesman for the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that more than 60 missiles had flown over Ukraine.

It is noted that due to today's Russian shelling, more than 50% of the consumption of the integrated energy system has been lost.

Ukrenergo announced a state of emergency in the energy system of Ukraine as of December 16, 2022. As reported on the company's website, due to Russian attacks on power facilities, there was a loss of 50% of the consumption of the United Energy System of Ukraine (IPS). In this regard, the company announced a system crash mode.

"December 16, 2022, as a result of massive rocket attacks by the Russian Federation on the electric power infrastructure of Ukraine, more than 50% of the consumption of the UES of Ukraine was lost, which, according to clause 2.4 of the Transmission System Code, determines the onset of the system accident mode," the report says.

According to the rules of the market, in the event of such a significant loss of consumption of the electrical system, an emergency is declared:

"According to the market rules (Chapter 9, paragraph 9.1.2), we inform about the occurrence of an emergency situation starting from the billing period from 09:00 on 12/16/2022."

Updated. Later, Ukrenergo added that the state of emergency was introduced only for participants in the electricity market. Considering that this is already the 9th wave of missile attacks on energy facilities, the restoration of the electricity supply may take longer than before. Priority electricity will be supplied to critical infrastructure facilities: hospitals, water utilities, heat supply facilities, and treatment facilities.

It is noted that as a result of hits, the northern, southern, and central regions suffered the most. "Power engineers keep the situation under control. Despite all the damage and thanks to the professional work of power engineers, a stable frequency of 50 Hz is maintained in the power system. We work synchronously with the European continental grid," Ukrenergo assured.
